Mark Summer, Inveneo's Chief Innovations Officer, just completed our longest WiFi network link yet - 55 kilometers (34 miles) from Port-au-Prince to Vallue Mountain, Haiti (link photo set).
In this test he achieved a -73 dBm signal strength and real throughput in excess of 20 Mbit, which could translate into 7+ Mbps download speeds for end users in the underserved communities of Léogâne, Petit-Goâves, and Grand-Goâves.
The First Step
This test link was the first step in Inveneo's rural connectivity expansion in Haiti.
Now that we've confirmed that a long-distance WiFi link can be made to bring sustainable Internet access to these communities, we can begin the effort to secure tower agreements and electrical power supplies for more permanent equipment installations.
Next, we will mobilize local ICT companies to see the business case for providing innovative rural connectivity options and low power computing systems to NGOs in these underserved locations.
This work has been funded by a generous grant from the EKTA foundation.
