In Kasoa, Ghana, east of Accra, sits the Good Shepherd Orphanage. This is where Students Bridging the Information Gap (SBIG) built a computer lab and library complex for the 450 students and orphans who live and learn there. This is SBIG’s second such installation in Ghana, and their first with Inveneo solutions.
SBIG believes the world is in an ICT age and, in order to prosper in the increasingly technology driven economy, every child should be given the opportunity to learn and develop his or her skills in the new field.
Working with Inveneo Certified ICT Partner (ICIP), 1Village Ghana, SBIG installed 18 ASUS Eee Box B202 computers with Inveneo low-power monitors, an Inveneo Hub Server R3, and a Ubiquiti Nano Station for internal WiFi. The group also chose to add an LED projector on the teaching system.
The computer center is just one part of the library project that SBIG is delivering for the Good Shepherd Orphanage. The other part is a library of books donated by the Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey.
"The computer lab and library represent a major step forward for GSO building upon the excellent work and vision of Bishop Kweku Addei, his staff and teachers," said Tom Killian, President of the SBIG Board of Trustees. "Who knows -- in two years, Good Shepherd Orphanage may be as well known for the reading and computer skills of its outstanding students as it is known for its football skills."
The center officially opened on June 13, 2009 with a dedication ceremony. Five students from the school, as well as members of the SBIG board of trustees, founder Bishop Kweku Addei, and other local dignitaries were in attendance. The photographs of the installation are courtesy of 1Village Ghana.
