Currently technology and communications services are delivered to remote communities in developing countries in one of two ways:
However, there is a limited amount of aid and traditional companies cannot find business models or capital to serve these areas. This leaves large parts of the world population underserved. In fact, over one billion people have no access to electricity or telecommunications, much less simple computing, e-mail or basic Internet access tools.
Inveneo, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, offers a new alternative to these communities through its open, non-centralized, sustainable approach. Inveneos mission is to design affordable technology solutions to match the specific needs of people in these underserved areas around the world, and to make these solutions available through a unique business model that gives local people full control over use and maintenance.
Inveneo designs its systems using off-the-shelf products and technologies. Inveneo integrates and customizes these technologies to match the needs of the users. Our focus is on system ruggedization, reduction of power consumption, language localization and maintenance simplification. The systems are designed so that many components can be produced or assembled regionally thereby reducing the costs, encouraging the creation of expertise, and supporting regional economic development. Systems are designed to be community or small business owned and operated, driving greater affordability and the path to long-term sustainability. Inveneo envisions fostering a forum for the remote communities to collaborate and exchange ideas and experiences. Inveneo will tap into this network to gain ideas for design improvements and new requirements.
