Product Description

The Mikrotik 951G-2HnD is a wireless Gigabit router and access point with five Gigabit Ethernet ports, one USB 2.0 port and a high power 2.4GHz 1000mW 802.11b/g/n wireless AP with antennas built in.

The 951G is a capable router and, along with Inveneo’s custom configuration file, makes for an appropriate edge device in most SOHO (small office / home office) scenarios. The router is far more customizable and powerful than most typical home-based devices, and cheaper than Inveneo’s previous offering, the R4. The device is easy to maintain, does not require linux command line experience and features a web-accessible graphical user interface. It serves as a direct replacement for the routing functionality of the R4 and, with usage graphs available to track bandwidth usage across different ports, offers an exceptional level of value.

In comparison with Mikrotik’s previous 751G-2HnD, the 951G has a more powerful CPU (600Mhz vs. 400Mhz), more RAM (128MB vs. 64MB) with the same form factor and price.

Our recommendation is especially based on the following criteria:

Value Value
The 951G offers exceptional value, boasting professional features that don’t typically come on standard routers. The customization, security features, hotspot functionality and advanced routing are services not available on most consumer-grade routers (Linksys, etc.).
Value Performance
The 951G has a long feature list including VPN capabilities and the ability to detect and block brute force intrusions (read more on this on ICTworks). The device also features gigabit ethernet ports (many routers are still limited to 10/100Mbps) and comes with POE injection on one port.
Value Power
The device doesn’t need much power to operate, averaging 4w in normal operation. A typical wireless router / access point can use as much as 19w.
Value Reliability
We experienced no downtime during testing, and the 951G comes with excellent monitoring tools including graphs to track performance over time. The 951G is based on Mikrotik’s 751G-2HnD which has demonstrated extremely high reliability during thousands of hours of field time. We expect similar performance from the 951G.
